What is the most common piece of career advice that I give out?
It would have to be, that too many people are too busy working in their jobs and are not working ON their careers!
All the problems that you are facing and all the things that are frustrating you - you need to step back and get insights on your situation and get feedback from others and work through what do you want to do?
Often people jump from job to job to job and still have the same issues and can't find a career that satisfies them.
Are you interested in
- a job,
- a career
or a calling?
What is the difference and what are you striving for?
- The Job:
A job is often a means to an end, a way to earn a living and meet immediate financial needs. It can lack long-term vision and personal fulfillment.
Many individuals view their jobs as necessary but may not find deep satisfaction or passion in the tasks they perform.
And you know what if you are focused on something else then this is more than ok! Perhaps you are just starting out or you are raising a family or you like to play golf on wednesday's or are studying then having a job is perfect.
- The Career:
A career is more than a job; it involves a long-term commitment to a particular field or profession. It involves focusing on skill development, professional growth, and advancement within your field. A career offers a sense of direction and purpose beyond just earning a paycheck. It involves setting goals, pursuing promotions, and striving for excellence.
- The Calling:
A calling transcends the conventional definitions of a job or career. It involves a deep sense of purpose, passion, and a connection to something greater than oneself. A calling is often marked by a strong alignment between their values, skills, and the impact they wish to make on the world.
Where are you at?
If you are in a job and would like a career - how do you start to build momentum towards that?
In my course The Confidence project we start by Understanding You and Your Strengths.
We do:
- a Self Reflection - Who are you and what are you good?
- a Skills audit - in my course I get you to review 8 Core skills and 8 Leadership. This shows you were you are kicking goals and where you may have some gaps and focus areas.
- Defining your Personal Brand - what do you want to be known for. How do you present yourself to the world?
Plus
- Asking for Feedback.
What are the skills that you have today vs the skills that you need to build to get you where you want to go.
I always say to my coaching clients how do you build a bridge between what you are doing today and what you want to do tomorrow?
The answer is through the skills and experience that you already have!
You need to see it first for yourself before you can convince anyone else!
