A few weeks ago - I was talking about how focusing on quarterly planning was helping me focus, but then that literally went out the window.
I decided to book myself and my horse into 3 horse shows over a few weekends.
The shows went great but I under estimated the amount of prep time, riding time and travelling time that would go into these efforts.
I thought that I would write this newsletter at the shows in my downtime.
The problem was I didn't have any downtime.
After packing my horse, camping stuff and driving - 5 hours. Setting up camp, settling horse into camp, eating dinner then riding my horse at 9pm at night at a distant location, then heading to bed - exhausted but wired on adrenalin and then actually doing prep riding for show starting at 5.30am in the morning then actually showing my horse for 2 days and then driving back home.
Downtime equalled zero.
If I wasn't on the horse, I was getting water for the horse, mucking out the stable, changing rugs but then also making sure I was eating enough.
And making sure my horse was well cared for.
It was great fun and I learnt lots (ie do not try to write a newsletter whilst participating in a horse show). I was so active that I literally lost a couple of kilos. When you take your horse to a show - you end up riding them about 3 - 4 times more than you would in a general training session. I left the kilos in the countryside somewhere.
Plus I decided in the end that I just wanted to enjoy the shows and you know what that is ok.
The learning can also be that sometimes things just do not go to plan.
I generally write this newsletter ahead of time so that if I do have writers block I can come back to it. But unfortunately the bank of articles was dry.
So here I am a few weeks later catching up.
So I didn't hit my commitment of a weekly newsletter for a few weeks but I hit a 'MASSIVE' personal goal of my own and that was to take my horse showing.
This goal has actually been 6 years in the making.
It has taken 6 years of ups and downs in this sport to have the courage and confidence in myself and my horse to get out there and start competing.
So I am proud of that.
Plus we surprised ourselves with some personal bests of 3rd place in 2 classes with about 15 people in the class!
Whooo hooo! I was surprised and emotional when they called my number!
Soooo next week I will drill into the plans and the headings for quarterly planning in a bit more detail xx
The plan is to take my horse to lots of shows next year so I better getting writing ahead of time.
Cheers Sam xx
