I recently was interviewed on a Tech podcast regarding my career. The interviewer did a whistle stop through my career asking lots of questions, how I got started in my career in tech, how I progressed through certain roles to being a CIO. Plus pivoting and now coaching and consulting as well as horse-riding etc.
Then he said 'I am going to quote something that you said'.
I was a bit surprised but was like - sure go for it!
Be Visible to Be Valued.
Boom - I love it. No wonder I said it.
If there is one thing to take away from the 80 newsletters articles that I have written and sent out (which are also on my website) is that to build your career in an organisation you need to be visible.
People need to know who you are and what you are capable of.
Plus I would add don't rely on others to make you visible. Some good people will take you under their wings and help you but some just won't.
Also - I don't mean hogging the limelight and annoying everyone.
Rather connecting yourself to important work and then delivering said work that solves a problem.
The more visible you can be working on important work then the more valued you can become.
And when you are valued - you get promoted.
Let me give you an example, recently I have been doing some tech consulting for a couple of organisations.
Through this work I have identified millions of dollars of cost savings.
Now there is nothing like saving money in an organisation that gets people's attention. It is very tangible and therefore can be measured. Then the money saved can be utilised in growth opportunities.
Boom. Visible and valued.
Give it a go.
PS. I will let you know when the podcast is coming out. xx
