I am a terrible runner.
I am slow.
I get out of breath and I don't really enjoy it.
My feet hurt, my knees hurt and as a 51 year old it is something that I have given up on. Unless it is for the train!
This is definitely a skill I have not mastered and I am ok with that.
I am not running any more races. And I am definitely not joining run club. These days I would rather focus on the things that I am good at rather than the things that I am not.
Twenty odd years ago though I did run and I got better and better but I never really enjoyed it - nor was I very good. (I secretly think that my feet are not big enough for my height!). With some focus and a lot of training and running I ended up doing tri-athlons! But did I really get into it - probably not. Ten points for trying and giving things a go!
My husband still tells the story of me popping out of the harbour (yes the big one in Sydney) in front of a whole lot of other competitors and being surprised at how well I had swam. I remember putting myself behind the pack as not to get swum over and just swimming straight while most people swam in various different directions. (hopefully redirecting all the bull sharks away from me!)
What I also remember is all those people then passing me on the run up the hill!!
Could I have become better at running and continued - yep I could but in the words of Jimmy Carr (the comedian) 'the world doesn't need anymore average physicists'. (or runners for that matter)
Figure out what you are good at.
What you enjoy.
Then find some people to join you!
In the Confidence project Part 1 is I Understanding You and Your Strengths. It covers
- Self reflection
- Define your Core Skills
- Define your Leadership Skills
- Define your Personal Brand
- Asking for Feedback
I am a big believer in you can't know where you are going if you don't know where you have been.
Do the work and you will be surprised at the clarity that it brings.
The funniest thing I find these days with all the horse-riding I have been doing is that when I do run I actually feel better than I used to. My legs are stronger and so is my stamina.
And that is enough for me.
My action item for this week is:
Write down 5 things that you are really good at!
Whenever you are ready, check out my Stan store with lots of resources you can use to help in your career. My Stan Store
If you are a bit stuck and want some advise then you have come to the right place.
