42. You are in charge of your own Career!

Jul 24, 2023

Fast-tracking your career requires self-motivation, determination, and a proactive approach. While others can offer support and guidance, you need to have a vision for your career and then take action. Let's dig into some ways that you can take control of your career journey.

Master your Current Job

The first step toward career mastery is to do your current job well. Begin by understanding your job description and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Break down tasks,
set clear targets,

and establish metrics to gauge your success.

Request feedback from superiors to ensure you're meeting and exceeding expectations.

Plus find opportunities to be VISIBLE at the organisation where you work. I am a big believer that you can't grow your career if you are not doing your current role well. Plus if no-one knows what you are doing then how can you get identified for the next opportunity.

Be Proactive: Seek New Challenges

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and seek new challenges. If you have your current workload under control, ask for extra tasks or projects.

Showing your initiative showcases your commitment to personal development. This contributes to your organisation.

There is always more work in organisations than people to do it! So ask away!

Embrace Lifelong Learning

Continuous learning is the key to staying relevant and advancing in your career. Take advantage online courses and resources available to enhance your skills and knowledge. What are you curious about or what would you like to learn more about?

What are the skills that you need to develop for the next opportunity - how can you develop these skills?

Ask everyone you can for feedback! Then sit with it and decided how you may want to take it on.

Develop a roadmap for your Career aspirations

Engage in open conversations with your boss, mentors, or colleagues about your ambitions. I am a big believer that if you don't tell anyone what you want to do then - how will they know.

Seek advice on potential steps and the skills required for your desired roles. Talk to people who have done this before and have experience. You can use this as a guide.
Your career can involve lateral moves or changes in organizations, and that's okay. If you get clear on what your vision is

Talk to as many people as possible about what you would like to do! You will learn so much through these conversations.

Build a Strong Support Network

Surround yourself with a supportive network of individuals who encourage and challenge you.
Cultivate relationships within your workplace and beyond, including peers, mentors, and friends. A trusted support network provides guidance, perspective and helps you navigate through challenges.

Remember, you have the power to steer your career in the direction you desire.

You have got this!! Cheers Sam. xx
